The Re-Release of Jurassic Park in 3-D: Why it’s Worth the Trip
I first saw “Jurassic Park“ with my family as a five year old. My parents had pre-screened it for us so that they could warn us about the scariest parts. It was one of those movie magic experiences. We were in absolute awe of it, and it made us even bigger dino-fanatics than we were before–a feat previously believed to be impossible. As soon as I saw that “Jurassic Park” was being re-released in 3-D, I knew I had to see it. Despite watching it countless times on VHS and then DVD, the 3-D experience was worth the ticket price. Anytime I have the opportunity to have an up close and personal dinosaur adventure, I go for it!
The dinosaurs are not the only draw “Jurassic Park” has. Throughout the movie there are beautiful acts of bravery and self-sacrifice. One of my favorite examples happens when the T-Rex approaches the stopped cars and Sam Neil’s character, Dr. Alan Grant, uses a flare to draw the predator away. Desperate to help Dr. Malcolm, played by Jeff Goldblum, this character grabs a second flare and tries to add to the distraction. He heard Alan say that the T-Rex can see only movement, but he is so panicked to save the children he forgets, and is almost killed for his effort. There is almost palpable love between all of the characters as they worry and care for each other as the adventure plays out.
It is definitely a scary movie, and I recommend screening it for your children before you allow them to see it. There is some bad language and lots of violence involving the dinosaurs. However, Steven Spielberg, the director, cleverly avoids the use of excess blood and gore. As a child I was most disturbed by the off-screen killing and eating of a helpless cow and a goat. Please be sure to prepare your children.
Lastly, “Jurassic Park 3-D” is a learning and teaching tool. Have your family look up their favorite dinosaur, take a trip to the museum, or watch educational features about dinosaurs together!
