Hanging with Duck Dynasty’s Miss Kay Robertson: My Favorite TV Mom!
Recently, I had the privilege of meeting A&E’s Duck Dynasty star Miss Kay Robertson during her press conference at Lifeway Christian Bookstores Headquarters in Downtown Nashville. She was there in support of her book tour and new cookbook: Miss Kay’s Duck Commander Kitchen: Faith, Family, and Food–Bringing Our Home to Your Table. She was also scheduled for a book signing at the People’s Church in Franklin, Tennessee. During the round robin media blitz, I was able to ask her a few questions:
Q: What were you doing for Thanksgiving?
A: I usually cook a big meal for family and friends, and then watch the Macy’s Day Parade. But not this year: we had to have our dinner early because I was in the parade this year!
Q: Have you ever gone hunting, and then prepared the food?
A: No, I don’t do that. I am not a fan of getting up at 4am and going hunting. I just like waiting on what the boys bring home and cooking it in my kitchen.
Q: Who taught you how to cook?
A: My grandmother, Callie Mae Carroway. I was at her feet all the time, so from an early age I was rolling out dough and probably making a big mess! I played with it as much as I did any good, but I learned. I did love that rolling pin, which is maybe why I love to make pastries and pies now.
Q:We watched you renew your wedding vows this year on the show. What is your secret to 49 years of marriage?
A: You have to fight for your marriage. Do whatever it takes. The commitment has to be there. And if you don’t have a sense of humor, I don’t know how anybody makes it. There have been many times that we took something we disagreed about and later just laughed at the way we acted. If you’re never able to laugh in life, you sure don’t enjoy it.
Q: Have you ever thought of buying a bigger house? You could live in a mansion if you wanted to!
A: We just added a closet. The boys laughed and said, “Mama’s got her money and what does she do? She builds a new closet.” I’ve got way too many good memories in this house, so we’re not going anywhere.
Q: How has the success of the TV show affected your family?
A: It’s hard going places now. Phil refuses to go to the movies because people come sit with you and want to talk the whole time. But I go myself and they don’t bother me as bad as they do the guys—the bearded ones, as I call them.
After a great round robin media blitz, I complimented her on doing a great job of keeping her family together and raising the “bearded ones,” as she called them, whom we have all enjoy watching so much. She was kind enough to meet my mother, pose for a picture, and listen with sincerity as we talked. I shared how special my mother is to me and how surreal it was to introduce my real mom to my favorite TV mom!
