Duck Dynasty’s “Mountain Man” of God – Talks To Rocking God’s House!
Today is Wednesday, the middle of the week for some, “Hump Day” as it is affectionately called. But for me it’s a very special day in deed. Why you ask? Duck Dynasty has launched its fourth season on Arts & Entertainment Network. The series features the Robertson’s, a Louisiana bayou family living the American dream as they operate a thriving business while staying true to their family values and lifestyle.
Today, I got a really special treat. I received a call by way of West Monroe, Louisiana. On the other end of the phone was “Mountain Man,” Tim Guraedy. “Hey Josh, how’s it going? This is Mountain Man,” said a voice, smooth and slow, like Eeyore of Winnie the Pooh eating molasses while trotting up a hill.
Duck Dynasty is the greatest thing since sliced bread at the moment. The first episode of this season raked in a whopping 11.8 million viewers. And Mountain Man is in the center of it all.
Mountain Man is Willie Robertson’s go-to guy and a jack of all trades. He fixed the air conditioner at Duck Commander when it broke and built a beautiful arbor for Phil and Miss Kay’s wedding. He credits this to his common sense and a willingness to get his hands a little dirty.
Mountain Man is also a radio deejay in West Monroe on Z 107.5 Big Z Country. He graces the airwaves each Tuesdays from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM Central Standard Time.
I was grinning ear to ear as we talked. For the last three seasons of the show, the man had been a stranger to me, but now I feel like he and the rest of the Robertson clan have become a part of my household—it feels like the Duck Dynasty cast are members of my very own family. I wanted to hang onto every word, so I had my precious mother Odessa sit beside me and document every word spoken, so I would not forget a thing.
How did you get the nickname Mountain Man?
“While in Tennessee! I grew up in Portland. My daddy bought me my first shotgun when I was nine, and I spent most of my time running through the hills and mountains. My favorite movie growing up was Jeremiah Johnson, and I always wanted to be a Mountain Man like him. And the name is me.”
How did you get involved with the Robertsons?
“Bruce King died; he was Willie Robertson’s air conditioner man. He was a great man. The next time Willie needed repairs on his air conditioner he asked one of his housekeepers if she knew anyone, and she told him about me. He liked me so much that he eventually invited me to be in a taping of Duck Dynasty. The producers liked the way I talked; they were interested in me, and it evolved from there. After the conveyer belt episode, Jase Robertson baptized me in the church. I felt good; I felt the Holy Spirit. It was on me when I came out of the water. I love the Robertsons; they love to help everybody. And I am really tight with Willie.”
Do you attend the same church as the Robertsons?
“I do when I have time. I go to many different churches, and I do testimonies. I am on the road a lot. I love everyone, especially little children. I want to help out in any way I can; they are our next generation. I don’t hate anyone and I don’t hold grudges.”
What is your favorite Bible verse?
“John 3:16. And the most important commandment is to love the Lord God with all your might and heart.”
How have you handled the fame of the show, and do you still go out in public?
“Not as much anymore. I try to avoid crowds, and I don’t mix with drinkers. Children love me. I like to talk with them. Once a month, late at night I go to Wal-Mart.”
Tell us about your radio program and the music you play?
“Country Music, random things, funny things, hunting, fishing, and camping! I read Bible verses and talk about them on air. I talk about what’s troubling people. There is a verse for everything, for every man, woman and child.”
You are a jack of all trades. Give me some examples of your skills?
“Electrical, plumbing, and carpentry. I can fix any kind of equipment. Whatever the problem is, I just use common sense. I worked at Popeye’s Chicken for eleven and a half years. I even was awarded Maintenance Man of the year!”
Tim Guraedy is a delightful human begin. And I’m not alone in my opinion as Duck Dynasty continues to rank well with the viewers. Duck Dynasty is the number one cable television show, and set new records for a non-fiction cable series—that’s also 2.2 million ahead of the series’ previous high, set in April.
Go Mountain Man!
