An Interview With Christian Artist Flyleaf… “Who Are We”

Josh Belcher of Rockin' God's HouseWho We Are! No, I’m not getting philosophical. It is the title for the new EP from hard-rocking, Texas based band Flyleaf. Who Are We explains everything about their newly restructured band, fresh with brand new singer Kristen May.

Kristen May, formerly of Vedera is a perfect fit. She was announced as Lacey Sturm’s replacement; Kristen stepped in and breathed new life into the band. She makes the vocal styling her own while taking us on a whole new adventure in the epic saga that is Flyleaf! She sings with a heart that has enough power to rip yours out!

The first song of five, titled ‘Something Better,” is uplifting and upbeat. With help from P.O.D’s Sonny Sandoval, Flyleaf is on a co-headlining US tour which began July 11, 2013.

Most platinum-selling bands would have closed up shop with the departure of their established front woman. Lacey Sturm departed the band in October 2012 due to the birth of her son Jack and the death of the band’s lead audio engineer, Rich Caldwell. Lacey felt it was time to step down and focus on different aspects of her life. We keep her in our prayers.

Flyleaf released a new single on June 18, 2013 with Kristen May on vocals: “Something Better,” featuring P.O.D. with front man Sonny Sandoval.

I interviewed Kristen before she took the stage in Nashville, Tennessee:

How does it feel to be the new front woman of the multi-platinum selling rock band Flyleaf?

I’m having a blast! I feel very blessed.
How do you think die-hard Flyleaf fans have taken to you so far?

Mostly good. I’m really just trying to focus on perfecting my craft and if the fans like it, great! I don’t Google my name or anything (laughing)!

I love the new EP, Who We Are. I like the energy and intensity of the live tracks, did you write any of the songs?
The EP features four original live versions of songs by Flyleaf written before I joined the band. This was to show fans what I could do with the previously recorded material. The studio track “Something Better” we wrote as a band. We’ll continue to write together as we prepare for a new album. Songwriting and collaborating is something I really enjoy.

The new song “Something Better” has Sonny Sandoval from P.O.D. on it, how did that collaboration come about?
Flyleaf toured with P.O.D. in the past so they already had a relationship. We share a producer friend, Howard Benson, and one thing led to another.

You guys are currently on a co-headlining tour with P.O.D.  How is that going so far?
Amazing. The crowds are awesome, and we’re having a ton of fun.

What advice would you give to a young girl who wants to become like you?
Keep trying and be true to yourself. Don’t let anyone tell you you’re not good enough. If you’re passionate and keep working at it, someone will listen.
